Switch to a Credit Union

Are you unhappy with your current banking situation? Now might be a good time to switch to a  credit  union . Surprisingly, many people do not realize that there is a big difference between  banks  and  credit  unions . By learning these differences you might decide that you want to switch and that you will be happier doing your banking there.

First of all,  credit  unions  are member-owned. When you become a member you become part owner as well. Banks are owned by investors and their whole aim is to make money. At a bank a member feels like a customer rather than a member. On the other hand,  credit  unions  are also usually smaller and focus on a select group of people, so you have more of a personal relationship with the staff.

Another difference between the two is that  credit  unions  are not-for-profit. Therefore, they do not have to pay state or federal taxes. This allows them to keep lower interest rates and lower costs. On the other hand, banks will usually create new fees and policies so they can boost profits and make more money off of their customers.

Once you know the differences between these two places for banking, it makes the decision a bit easier to make. Switching is the smart thing to do. You will feel more at home and your interest rates and fees will usually stay lower than they would if you were at the bank. Make the switch and you will be happy with your banking situation.

Check Holds - Getting the Bank to Release Your Funds

With the recent shake up in the economy and the banking industry, banks and credit unions are looking for more and more ways to increase their revenue. The new methods include hanging on to your money for longer periods (the float), increased fees for overdrafts, and automatic increases to your interest rates whenever they can.

My own credit union is no exception. I noticed that they are waiting until the end of the day to credit deposits to my account, but are much quicker to take money out of the account.

Another way my credit union works to increase their float is in the matter of how long it will take to credit a check. I recently initiated a transfer from my secondary bank to my credit union to cover some bills. This is accomplished through a web check, which I am sure you all have used before.

The surprise this time is that my credit union has a policy, unknown to me, of putting a five day hold on deposits over $2500.00. This greatly increases the float time and might seriously inconvenience you. Note that we are not talking about a personal check that might or might not have funds; this was a check from another bank.

However, the credit union or bank also has the discretion to release the funds, if asked in the right manner. Here are the steps I used to resolve the issue and get my deposit credited without waiting.

1. I prepared for the call by having my account information in front of me. This included being logged in to my credit union’s online site. I also had my Quicken software open so that I could search previous transactions. I knew I might be on hold for a while, so I blocked out the time to work on this and set up to use my wireless headset so I could use the computer and write as we talked.

2. I called the credit union’s toll free number and verified my account by providing personal information.

3. I asked why even though I could see a deposit from my secondary bank to my credit union account, the money was NOT shown in the “Amount Available” column. Note that getting angry at this point will not help your case; you should have the mindset of trying to resolve a problem together. The agent put me on hold while he did some research and finally came back and said, “Our policy is to put a five day hold on all checks over $2500.00. Your check should clear in four more days.”

4. This is the point where you should ask for their assistance in getting the funds. I said, “I understand that policy, but this is a check from another bank, not a personal check. Please check and see if you can get the funds released. If not, please release the funds below the $2500.00 limit.” This would have given me at least $2499.99 of my money. I believe giving the representative options at this point greatly increased the chances for success.

5. The agent said he would have to pass the request on to a supervisor for approval. He warned me that he would have to put me on hold and the hold might be for as long as ten minutes. This is where being prepared to wait helped. I replied, “No problem, I appreciate any assistance you can give me.”

6. After about five minutes, the supervisor came on line. Once again, I had to verify some personal information. She then asked me the account number and contact details of the bank that had issued my check. This is where having all my records in front of me helped. I gave her the other bank’s phone number, my account number, and the issued check number. Once again, I was put on hold.

7. The supervisor came back after several minutes and said she had verified my info with the other bank and was assured that my account had sufficient funds to cover the check. She stated that she was approving the deposit and the money should be available immediately.

8. At this point, everything appeared to be complete. However, I was monitoring my account online and the funds were not yet available. I explained this to the supervisor. She asked me to refresh my screen several times, but there was no change to the “Amount Available” column.

9. I requested that she check on this for me. She had to put me on hold again and asked another supervisor to perform some magic in the background to clear the funds. This time, after several refreshes, the “Available Amount” finally showed my money.

10. I made it a point to thank everyone involved for assisting me. It might not help (but it certainly can’t hurt) to be pleasant when dealing with your bank.

11. Last, but not least, I made a note to never send a check for more than $2500.00 to my credit union. Since my secondary bank’s online checks are free, it would have cost me nothing to split the deposit into two checks, each below the mandatory five day hold limit.

The credit union is perfectly within their rights to place holds on checks. The governing regulations regarding check holds are covered in:

PART 229–AVAILABILITY OF FUNDS AND COLLECTION OF CHECKS (REGULATION CC)

The full text of these regulations is available at:

http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_00/12cfr229_00.html

Conclusion:

So, how long did it take me to get this accomplished? Time to prepare was 20 minutes; time on the phone was 30 minutes; total time was less than an hour. It was well worth the effort as it enabled me to make on time payments to other accounts.

Try this method the next time you negotiate with your bank or credit union.

Useful Tips to Smoothly Work With OS X Yosemite

Even though, the OS X Yosemite has been here for a while but there are certain things that you are still not aware of. While you are still wondering about how to go about working with things like iCloud, Extensions, e-mail, Safari and messages it would be a lot easier if you know how to.

Given here are some useful tips to smoothly work with OS X Yosemite:

iCloud

First of all, you need to turn on the iCloud Drive that is possible with iOS 8 this will help you share your documents between your iPhone and iPad. You can do this by navigating through System Preferences-iCloud, and then selecting the checkbox against iCloud Drive. The folder of this drive will be added to your system. Now whatever this folder contains will be accessible to you over your two devices. You can even choose the apps that you want to use with iCloud Drive, here is how:

System Preferences- iCloud- Options and select the apps you want to include.

The standard storage that you get is that of 5GB, for more go to System Preferences- iCloud- Manage.

You can even use the option of Family accounts by going to System Preferences- iCloud-Family Account.

Managing Extensions

In the OS X Yosemite, you can manage your Extensions and define the way they work. To do this simply navigate through the System Preferences- Extensions. This will reveal the options that are available in the Extensions that include, Finder Actions, Menu, Share and Today.

Sharing is essential so you can set it up by going to System Preferences- Extensions, here you have the options to choose or unselect the options that you do not want.

Settings for Safari

Favorites View is similar to the Bookmark bar; this can be accessed by tapping on the URL within the Search box. If you want the Bookmarks bar then go to Safari- View- Show Favorites Bar.

If you find your Favorites bar cluttered then you can just click and drag to remove them from the Favorites bar. If you want to remove the bar then go to Preferences- Search, unselect the Show Favorites box. This will remove it completely and it would not appear any longer.

At times, you might just get annoyed with the Spotlight suggestions, you can remove it by going to Preferences- Search and unselect the box against Spotlight Suggestions.

To access a new tab go to the icon of new square document or use the Shift + Command + to launch it.

To clean up the history you need to go to History- Clear History and Website Data.

You can even choose to block third-party cookies by choosing the “Allow from current website only” option that enables the feature in blocking all cookies that are not a part of current website you are on.

Mail and Messages

Now, it is relatively easier to annotate your messages as you need not quit to do it. The option is available within the e-mail even while you are replying to it.

You can even add a signature to your form first you need to annotate the picture:

• Go to the picture that you have in your e-mail message and click the download arrow- Markup

• Select the icon for Signature and using your trackpad create it or sign on a paper and snap a picture that you can use.

• To view attachments you can go to the Recipient- Details this will reveal all the attachments including pictures that are received by you.

When you need peace of mind or are busy with other tasks you won’t want to be bothered by conversation tone, you can mute it by going to Conversation- Details- Do Not Disturb.

This way you can apply these tips and easily benefit from OS X Yosemite without any complications.

Women"s College Basketball - History and Background

It is well known that basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Nesmith, but what is not so well known is the history of women’s basketball. The inaugural women’s  college  basketball  session was actually part of a physical education class at Smith  College  for girls in Connecticut.

The very first women’s  college  basketball  game took place at Smith  College  for girls in 1893 where the freshman played against the sophomores. Unlike women’s  college  basketball  games today, the game actually took place behind locked doors and men were prohibited from watching.

The rules of this first women’s  college  basketball  game were altered from those of the original men’s version to enhance teamwork. The court had 3 zones and three players from each team of nine were allowed in each zone but could not move out of their zone. Funnily enough, these early restrictions in the women’s  college  basketball  game are strikingly similar to the game of netball that is played by schoolgirls and women all over Europe.

Women’s  college  basketball  began to spread quickly and the first game between two different women’s  college  basketball  teams was played in April 1896 with Stanford beating Berkley. There were still 9 players on each women’s  college  basketball  team in this inter-college game but instead of keeping the original rule where a player could only hold the ball for 3 seconds and must dribble it 3 times before passing this was changed so that a player could not run more than 5 feet before having to pass the ball. Once again, however, as with the first women’s  college  basketball  game, men were not allowed to watch the game.

The formal rules of women’s  college  basketball  were first produced in 1901 and went through numerous changes before developing into the game that is played today. One of the most interesting aspects of the early women’s  college  basketball  games is that the basket was sewn shut so that the umpire had to remove the ball from it every time it was put through the hoop.

The familiar indoor  basketball  court that today’s women’s  college  basketball  teams play on was not always made available to the women for a couple of decades after the sport began. Some women’s  college  basketball  teams had to play on grass courts outside and did not have the chance to play on an indoor court at all.

General Information About Credit Unions

Credit  unions  provide another option for your finances. If you are not happy with the bank you have your money placed with presently or if you are looking for a brand new financial experience, this is another kind of banking institution worth checking out.

These alternatives to banks can be thought of as non-profit cooperative financial establishments that are owned and collectively controlled by the members that make them up. These organizations differ from banks in that the customers who open up accounts also become owners in the company. The members are able to vote and elect the board of directors.  Credit  unions  are democratic in nature. Every person who is a member is given the right to vote. It has nothing to do with the amount of money that each customer has invested. A person could have $200 in an account, $2,000 or $20,000 and they are still permitted to vote.

Credit  unions  have their own type of policies that are not necessarily the same as other types of financial institutions. For example, interest rates are chosen by the volunteer board of directors who are elected by the present members of the establishment. In order to open an account and do transactions such as deposit money, withdraw money or apply for a loan, they are required to become a member of the business. Loans and any type of investments can only take place by those who are current members of the financial facility.

These places make it their primary goal to encourage and support the financial growth and stability of all of the members that make it up. How long a person has been a member does not matter. What matters is that the individual has joined and therefore has a say in all of the decisions that are made.

Organizations of this sort are not-for-profit or non-profit establishments. They can however be thought of as being for-profit enterprises in another sense because they make money for their members. The means by which this takes place is that the members earn profits based upon the reduced interest rates that the loans at the facility have. Another means of earning profits is based upon the dividends that are paid out to individuals on the savings they have made. Be aware that these products are all taxed as a regular source of income.

There is a business structure to credit companies. The structure is quite complex in nature and is not the same as its financial competitor, the banks. The goal behind  credit  unions  is to make the members’ shareholders and the shareholders members. By them being one, this eliminates a number of problems associated with other kinds of financial organizations.

Generally speaking, these establishments do not accept any form of monetary donations. In order to stay afloat, the company is expected to remain competitive in the industry. By holding its own, the business is able to remain strong.

Banking Alternatives: Do You Need A Bank?

Although using a bank is the most common method of storing and accessing your money, there are some alternatives you should consider. If you feel that your bank isn’t giving you what you want, then perhaps it is time for a change. Here are some banking alternatives that might be able to offer you the features and services that you require.

Why use a bank?

Of course, the main reason to use a bank is the fact that banks are widely available, and they are the first option that comes to mind when dealing with finances. In fact, some people aren’t even aware that there are alternatives to banking apart from keeping your money at home. Although banking has its uses, it can cost you money for day-to-day financial matters that you can get for less. Bank fees can be extremely expensive, but there are some alternatives.

  Credit   unions

Credit  unions  are one alternative to using conventional  banks . Unlike  banks ,  credit  unions  are not for profit organisations that are run by their members.  Credit  unions  are used by people who share a workplace or occupation, or even a religion. They offer many of the same services as banks, but because profit is not their main function they can offer lower fees and higher interest rates on savings than normal banks.  Credit  unions  can be fairly large and organisations, and some offer similar levels of convenience to a regular  bank . If you are looking for cheaper fees and better interest rates on savings then a  credit  union  might be right for you. However,  credit  unions  are still small compared to  banks , and you cannot simply join the  credit  union  of your choice. You have to meet their specific requirements or be related to someone who is already a member in order to join. Also, you generally have to save money with a  credit  union  before you can have access to other financial products.

Online banking

Perhaps the best alternative to traditional banking is online banking. There are many banks that operate solely online, and there are a lot of benefits to this sort of bank. Although you might not be able to get money as easily as you could with a normal bank, you can transfer funds and pay bills much more efficiently. Also, online banks usually operate all day every day, meaning that you can access your account and carry out transactions whenever you want. For paying bills and transferring money, you can’t really beat online banking

Combining accounts

Although there are viable alternatives to traditional banking, perhaps the best way to save yourself time and money is to have a combination of accounts. If you are eligible for a  credit  union , then saving with them is probably the best option as you can get great rates and you might be able to borrow money at a much more reasonable rate if you need to do so in the future. You could combine this with an online account to pay your bills, as this allows you to pay bills quickly and manage your money more effectively so that you always pay on time. Thirdly, having a traditional bank account is usually a good idea, because if any problems arise you can go to your bank and speak to someone face to face. If you look around at all the alternatives to regular banking then you could save yourself money and make banking work more effectively for you.
